In everyday work, handling large amounts of data and tedious tasks could be sometimes overwhelming. Thus, in a solution-driven job the possibility to store, swiftly acquire and organize useful data and to automate assignments is invaluable. Obtaining new skills and applying them into science could save a lot of time and make work more efficient.

Python has proven itself practical in a variety of areas, and it is applicable also in particular in the field of life sciences and medical research. Furthermore, it is reliable and relatively easy to learn.

Understanding the basics of one of the most widely used programming languages would benefit in having daily work better organized, for example through data analysis or automating laborious and repetitive tasks.

During the course, the participants will find out how using Python could contribute to their academic research. The key of our training is to give the participants the tools which will make their jobs well planned and worthwhile.

Experience level: beginner +
The training is aimed at those who already know the basics of Python and would like to improve their skills (it is recommended to have knowledge of: defining variables, basic operations on numbers and character strings, lists, dictionaries, for and while loops, reading and writing simple text files).

Additional information:

The training course has been prepared in the form of 3 online meetings, which will allow the participants to constructively and intensively learn the basics of data analysis using Python.

During the training, the participants will learn:

  • how to build and use custom functions;
  • interesting spreadsheet operations that can be performed using Python;
  • about the matplotlib library, a popular data visualization toolkit;
  • how the potential of artificial intelligence can be used to speed up the process of writing both simple and advanced code.

Prior to the training, participants will receive instructions that will assist them with installing the Python language on their computers in a Windows 10 environment, as well as other necessary tools.
After each meeting, participants will be given additional tasks to complete on their own in order to consolidate the acquired knowledge and skills.
After the training, participants will get access to all materials used during the training, including all slides and comprehensively annotated source code.

Mateusz Dobrychłop – graduated with a master’s degree in bioinformatics from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan and Poznan University of Technology. He is currently pursuing a PhD project, where he uses the Python language to build bioinformatics tools to create 3D models of large macromolecular complexes. In parallel, for the last several years he has been involved in data analysis for large pharmaceutical companies. Using expertise in data science and programming, as well as knowledge from the life sciences area, he supports pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies on their journey through their so-called “digital transformation,” which is a process that often requires the extraction, classification and migration of large data sets – for example, data from clinical trials, or regulatory data. Mateusz supported the PyLadies initiative in Poznań for many years, offering training in various aspects of Python for women (and others) planning to enter the IT industry.
